The Premier League is yet to even kick off but Leeds have already made a colossal statement.

£31m on a Spain international with Champions League experience? Thank you very much.

Rodrigo is yet to be formally announced as a Leeds player but Valencia have confirmed he's off with the two teams agreeing on a club-record deal for the Whites.

This is a move that's rather come out of nowhere. Victor Orta was busy acquiring younger players for the academy and then bang, in walks your most expensive signing ever.

This has been a summer to remember so far. They achieved promotion, won the Championship and also saw their academy receive Category One status.

This is not just a testament to the hard work of Marcelo Bielsa, but an ounce of thanks should go towards the likes of Andrea Radrizzani and Angus Kinnear as well.

Alongside Orta, they have run a tight-knit ship, one that's now only adding to its armoury.

Andrea Radrizzani

Speaking of armouries, Leeds are looking towards Arsenal to improve their defensive ranks. I don't think they ever got the memo about the Gunners - they can't defend.

Yet, they've now targeted not one, but two of their centre-backs. First, it was Rob Holding, but in a fresh report, they're now in the race to sign Calum Chambers.

The 25-year-old has had a price tag of £12m slapped on his head so it's a deal that would come relatively cheap in today's market.

TEAMtalk state that Fulham are also battling it out to sign the English defender who has been capped three times by his country.

Orta has history with Chambers after signing him on loan for Middlesbrough when he was a director at the Riverside.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Leeds need bodies in defence but this is not the right way of doing so.

Chambers is an inconsistent defender. One minute he's putting his body on the line and blocking a goalbound shot, but the next he looks particularly uncomfortable, especially when facing quick and pacey attackers.

After a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in the 2017/18 season, football pundit Tony Cascarino had some rather choice words for him.

Speaking about Chambers, he was damning, saying: "Last night, the 22-year-old central defender was nervous on the ball and lacking concentration - he was an accident waiting to happen."

Calum Chambers vs Everton

And that just about sums it up. Chambers lacks confidence and you feel like a mistake is always there.

He may have won Fulham's Player of the Season in 2018/19 but you can't help but feel as though this would be a mistake from the Leeds hierarchy.

After all, the defender is out until the New Year with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Considering Leeds have just one fit senior central defender as it is, this would be a barbaric piece of business.

Perhaps it's one for January, rather than the summer.
