Barcelona are in crisis.

It looks like their greatest ever player - Lionel Messi - is about to walk away from Camp Nou.

He reportedly faxed the club a document asking for his contract to be terminated, which would allow him to leave for free this summer.

The situation is complicated by the fact that - although Messi's contract does include a clause that lets him leave - Barca will argue it expired in June.

It looks like this one will be settled in court. But why is the Argentine so desperate to leave?

Well, there are a number of reasons and many centre around his relationship with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Per Sport, Messi has 'never had a good relationship' with the board's leadership and although he's been happy to tow the club line, he's never bought into their ideas.

Messi is ready to walk from Barcelona

On top of that, he disagreed with the decision to sack Ernesto Valverde and has been unimpressed by the club's long-term sports panning for a while now.

Throw into the mix that his close friend Luis Suarez has been told to leave and it comes as little surprise that Messi wants to go.

But according to the latest reports, there's another twist in this tale.

There's another twist in the Messi saga

TV3, per The Sun, report that Bartomeu is willing to RESIGN as president if Messi publically confirms he's staying at Barcelona

The news comes shortly after fans attempted to storm the gates at Camp Nou, protesting his presidency.

Well, the ball is back in Messi's court now. He could make a u-turn, stay in Spain and re-commit to the club with a new president at the helm.

Bartomeu could walk away from Barca

Or, it could be too little, too late. The damage may already be done and the GOAT's decision to leave could be irreversible.

Who ever said no player is bigger than the club?
