If you tried to add up the number of central defenders Leeds have been linked with this week, you'd run out of fingers.

Ben White was their main target but after Brighton rejected a third bid for his services, it seems their focus is now elsewhere.

Ever since that reality emerged, Leeds have been touted with numerous central defenders.

From Rob Holding and Calum Chambers to Freiburg's Robin Koch, they aren't short of options.

Add the likes of Lyanco and Mykola Matviyenko to that list and Victor Orta is almost spoilt for choice.

They are casting their net wide in the hope of bolstering their centre-back numbers.

At the moment, Liam Cooper is their only fit central defender. White has departed after his loan spell and Gaetano Berardi is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. It is imperative they sign a couple of bodies.

And now, remarkably, there is another defender on their list of targets.

This move appears to be in its final stages too if you believe Italian media outlet LalazioSiamonoi.

They suggest that Leeds are now in talks to sign Lazio centre-half Luiz Felipe.

Both Barcelona and PSG have been interested in the 23-year-old but it's Leeds who have started negotiations first.

The deal has accelerated in 'the last few hours' with Andrea Radrizzani's intermediary Lorenzo Tonetti meeting with Igli Tare, Lazio's Sporting Director.

It's understood that Leeds are ready to put €30m (£26.8m) plus bonuses on the table for the Brazilian. However, it's thought that another €7m-8m will do the trick for Lazio.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

It's clear to identify what Leeds want from a defensive recruit - the ability to pass and play out from the back.

The Whites were one of the best sides in the Championship last season in terms of keeping possession and it's become a major part of the way Bielsa's side operates.

Immediately you can how Luiz Felipe would fit into this philosophy.

In Serie A last term, the defender managed to complete a highly impressive 88.8% of his passes.

It's probably no surprise, therefore, that he picked up the one assist in 2019/20.

Interestingly, Felipe's pass tally is even better than what White managed during his loan stint at Elland Road.

The Bright youngster completed 84.6% of his passes on the way to becoming a fan favourite.

Leeds might not stand a particularly good chance of bringing him back in time for the new season, but Felipe would be a very good alternative.

That being said, is he worth more to Leeds than White is? Their current bid is worth more than what they submitted for their former loanee.
