Three years on from Conor McGregor’s lucrative crossover into the world of boxing, fans of the sport are still talking about the fight with arguably the greatest of all time Floyd Mayweather.
'Money' returned to the ring after a two-year retirement for the bout with the Dublin-born UFC fighter, with the boxer going on to secure a 10th round stoppage and a 50th win in as many fights.
Despite Mayweather controlling the fight, McGregor was aggrieved when referee Robert Byrd brought the contest to a premature end, insisting the fight should have been allowed to run its course.
As he congratulated the victorious Mayweather, McGregor told him, as per The Mirror: “I punched you a lot in the early rounds. Your composure is great though, fair play to you. A little early, a little early.”
The fight went down as the second-richest bout in the sport’s history, with Mayweather’s unanimous points decision over Manny Pacquiao two years prior proving to be the only contest to earn more money.
Whether it’s another payday the Irishman wants or whether he’s out for revenge, McGregor has talked up his chances of getting the better of Mayweather in a potential rematch.
“I know I would win. I would like to rematch him under boxing rules again and I believe I would win. Actually, there I go again with that fake humbleness... I know I would win!” commented the 32-year-old.
“When I went into the fight, in the early rounds I was whooping him, in the early rounds. I went back to my corner after the first round and I said, 'This is easy!'... and then he had to switch up his style.”
Mayweather, now 43, has distanced himself from the fight as he looks to have hung up the gloves for good.
