Thiago Silva is the latest signing in Chelsea's summer spending spree. There's a growing feeling that Frank Lampard's men could challenge for the Premier League title this season after signing Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and now the Brazilian.Silva arrives at Stamford Bridge fresh from a narrow 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League final and having spent the last eight years at Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea welcome Thiago Silva

"I am so happy to be joining Chelsea," the Brazilian told the club's website. "I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours."

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: "We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad.

"Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here.

"Thiago will be an excellent fit and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honours."

What Silva brings to Chelsea

Silva adds unrivalled experience to the Chelsea back-line at 35 years old, which will prove invaluable after poor defencing led to the Blues conceding 53 leagues goals during 2019/20.

They might not be signing Silva at the peak of his powers, but let his journey to the Champions League final with a largely inexperienced PSG side speak volumes about his recent form.

In other words, Chelsea fans, there's plenty of reason to be excited about Silva's arrival and perhaps nothing has whipped up anticipation more than a video from the Champions League itself.

Viral Champions League video

The official Twitter account of Europe's premier competition uploaded a stunning two-and-a-half-minute montage heralding Silva as 'one of the best defenders to have graced the #UCL'.

The caption also applauded Silva for having 'next-level anticipation', 'quality distribution', being 'dominant in the air' and loving a tackle. You can check out the full video down below:

You're on to a winner here, Blues fans.

As far as we're concerned, there are few better sights in football than a passionate defender celebrating a tackle and it's clear that Silva absolutely loves the art of defending.

You just know that the Brazilian is going to land the perfect slide tackle at some point during his Premier League career and whip up the Stamford Bridge crowd just seconds later.

So, sure, Silva's arrival isn't going to fix Chelsea's defensive problems in a flash, but Lampard could have done much worse than signing one of Europe's best defenders for absolutely nothing.

If Silva can't whip Chelsea's back four into better shape, then it won't be from a lack of trying.
