Whoever Barcelona sign to ‘replace’ Lionel Messi has incredibly big shoes to fill.

It would be like a toddler attempting to fill clown shoes.

It’s impossible.

But one man who certainly has the confidence to do just that is Memphis Depay.

After an unsuccessful campaign at Manchester United during the 2015/16 season, Depay has reignited his career in France with Lyon.

And last night, during his side’s opening Ligue 1 game of the season, the Dutchman showed exactly why he was being linked with a move to the Camp Nou.

Depay scored a hat-trick, set up an own goal with brilliant skill and generally put on a masterclass of a performance during Lyon’s 4-1 victory over Dijon.

DEPAY'S OVERALL PERFORMANCE

It really was one of the most complete performances you’re ever likely to see.

But perhaps even more significant were the comments he made after the match.

DEPAY'S POST-MATCH COMMENTS

Depay was asked about his future, to which he replied: "I do not see the future, I do not know if I will do the full season here. I have been here for four years, I became captain.

"After you have to look at your career, there is no Champions League. At the moment I don't know."

Depay went on to say how it wasn’t the best game he played, despite his Man of the Match performance.

"I'm really happy to have scored three goals today," he admitted.

"It wasn't the best game I've played but we start the season with three points, and that's the most important thing.

"We have shown we can fight against the big teams, but we have to stay focused and win against the so-called 'smaller' teams. We have a lot of good players. We have to give our best to aim for the top."

We’d love to see the games in which he believed he played better…

If Barca were watching, they would have been very impressed.
