Chelsea seem to have the deepest pockets in the Premier League right now.

Frank Lampard did a fantastic job to lead the Blues into the Champions League last season despite the club's transfer ban and now he finally has an opportunity to throw some cash about.

Clearly that year without being able to dip into their funds has allowed Roman Abramovich to save up his coppers because the west Londoners have already made six signings this summer.

Chelsea's spending spree

Hakim Ziyech was the first arrival with his signing completed as early as February, moving from Ajax to the tune of €40 million, while Timo Werner followed him through the door for £45 million in June.

The Blues then made Ben Chilwell their most expensive summer signing of all with a fee in the region of £50 million, before Thiago Silva joined him at Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

Throw in the fact Malang Sarr and Xavier Mbuyamba have also put pen to paper on Chelsea deals and Kai Havertz is on the brink of arriving for £90 million and you have yourself a crazy summer.

Surely no more spending...?

So, surely, Chelsea will be putting their cheque book back in the drawer when Havertz signs the paperwork to leave Bayer Leverkusen, right? Right? Right???

Well, astonishingly, there's good reason to think that Chelsea could extend their spending splurge beyond the arrival of Havertz and it could take place across various positions on the pitch.

First and foremost, Chelsea still haven't fulfilled their ambitions to replace Kepa Arrizablaga between the sticks despite Ajax's André Onana and AC Milan's Gianluigi Donnarumma being linked.

Chelsea considering Rice move

But perhaps most unexpectedly of all, it seems as though Lampard hasn't finished sculpting his midfield and The Sun are reporting that Declan Rice could join the revolution this summer.

They claim that Chelsea are willing to push their spending over £250 million by making an approach for the England international with the Hammers valuing him at a dizzying £80 million.

Nevertheless, the Blues believe they are well-placed to sign the 21-year-old and are therefore optimistic that they can push for a similar discount to the one Leicester gave them for Chilwell.

It's said that Lampard sees Rice as the 'ideal man to help the club get back in the Premier League title mix' as well as a 'natural leader' who could be taken under the wing of Thiago Silva.

GIVEMESPORT's Kobe Tong says

The report does say that Chelsea are willing to play the long game and I think that's the key detail here.

Just yesterday, we looked at Chelsea's remarkable squad depth heading into the 2020/21 season and trust me when I say that one area they're well and truly stacked is the centre of midfield.

As a result, if Chelsea are indeed going to make Rice one of their transfer priorities, then it should come with an intention to play him as a centre-back.

Especially if Havertz arrives as everybody expects him to, Chelsea are better off spending their cash on improving a back five that conceded 53 Premier League goals, the same as Brighton, in 2019/20.

Rice is one of the best young players in England's top flight, no doubt about it, but a 2020 move to Chelsea doesn't make sense unless they bring him alongside Silva in the back-line.
