Arsenal beat Liverpool to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.

The fixture, which typically kicks off the new season, is played between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners.

Jurgen Klopp's side were made heavy favourites, given just how dominant they've been over the last campaign - and the fact they've had a longer pre-season.

But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted the first goal, curling in a beauty from the edge of the box to give Arsenal the lead.

The Gunners held on until the 73rd minute when Takumi Minamino scored an equaliser and many expected Liverpool to go and finish the job.

But they didn't. With the score tied after 90 minutes, the Community Shield went to penalties and it was Arsenal who held their nerve, winning 5-4 on spot-kicks.

Cue the celebrations for Mikel Arteta's side. Once again, they had triumphed at Wembley. It's been a pretty good summer at the national stadium for the north London club.

Arsenal won the Community Shield at Wembley

Many players took to social media to react to the win, with the likes of Aubameyang, Rob Holding and Sead Kolasinac all sharing photos and videos of the celebrations.

While there are winners, there are also losers too - and for the second year in a row, it was Liverpool who lost the Community Shield.

But 17-year-old Harvey Elliott probably isn't that bothered. Last year, he laughed off the Reds' loss to Man City and called the shield a 'McDonald's trophy' before referencing Liverpool's six Champions League wins.

Elliott comments on Arsenal's Community Shield win

His response split the opinion of fans back then, and it's re-emerged this weekend, causing the same controversy. Liverpool supporters obviously loved it, while rival fans hated it.

"His attitude stinks," one said on Twitter, while a second said: "Harvey Elliott is bitter af."

Another added: "No way Harvey Elliott is this salty about a 'McDonald's trophy', bringing up the Champions League like he contributed to them winning it."

Elliott's comments split fan opinion

Liverpool fans were far more supportive of his claims, saying: "Harvey Elliott summed that game up well..." and "Harvey Elliott is my spirit animal."

While footballers, of course, are allowed to have a social media presence and a personality, we can't help but feel Elliott's comments were a little immature back in 2019 and they've come back to bite him again.
