Aston Villa ready move for "outstanding" colossus

Emiliano Martinez

We’re now just three weeks away from the start of the Premier League season but Aston Villa haven’t signed a single senior player.

For all the links, and for all the talk of how much Dean Smith could spend, it’s been a quiet window for a club who went absolutely bonkers only a year ago.

In the summer of 2019, the Villans spent over £120m on 12 players.

Perhaps they’ve learnt their lesson that widespread recruitment isn’t the answer? They finished 17th in the Premier League last term, surviving by the very skin of the teeth.

Consequently, Sporting Director Jesus Garcia Pitarch was given the boot.

Stepping into his shoes is Johan Lange, a man who is yet to truly stamp his authority on proceedings at Villa Park.

Aston Villa have been interested in the likes of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma at Brentford. Remarkably, we’ve also seen a possible move for Tammy Abraham touted.

However, the newspapers revealed a more realistic target over the weekend.

According to the Independent, Aston Villa are planning a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

The Argentine was in superb form after replacing the injured Bernd Leno between the sticks for the Gunners last term.

However, with Leno looking likely to come in and reclaim his place, Martinez could leave north London behind.

It was claimed by The Athletic that teams in Spain are interested in his services, but Villa are one of the English teams ready to offer him an escape route.

The Independent claims that their bid could be in the region of £10m. That being said, Arsenal may want double the price for the 6 foot 5 goalkeeper.

GIVEMESPORT’S Matt Dawson says…

Martinez was nothing short of outstanding for the Gunners last season. He was commanding in his area, superb with the ball at his feet and made some crucial saves.

His shot-stopping was a joy to behold as he played a vitally important role in Arsenal’s run to being crowned FA Cup winners.

The 27-year-old also played during their Community Shield victory over Liverpool on Saturday where he demonstrated his ever-growing confidence.

Described as “outstanding” by former stopper Shaka Hislop, Martinez is a player on the rise, one capable of stepping out of Leno’s shadow and becoming a no. 1 in his own right.

That being said, Aston Villa really don’t need a goalkeeper and their focus should be elsewhere.

Pepe Reina may have left but they still have Tom Heaton, Jed Steer and Orjan Nyland on their books. That’s three stoppers all vying for the same place.

Splashing out a potential £10m-£20m on another ‘keeper, therefore, sounds ridiculous. Of course, Martinez has proven exceptional, but they should put their money into something else for the time being.
