Celtic came into the weekend six points adrift of Rangers in the race to win the SPFL.

After the Gers won on Saturday, they then fell nine points behind their closest rivals.

A clash against Motherwell, therefore, was a must-win.

This has been a rocky period for Celtic. They don't usually have them so this will be a test of not only Neil Lennon's management, but also the players' mentality.

Boli Bolingoli's foolish behaviour in failing to quarantine after vising Spain meant the Bhoys had two games postponed.

Following that, they then lost their Champions League qualifier with Hungarian opposition Ferencvaros.

That was embarrassing for the Hoops who have been struggling somewhat in the last couple of weeks.

Perhaps a few recruits in the transfer window could settle the side somewhat? That will probably depend greatly on whether anyone leaves.

Odsonne Edouard has been linked with Aston Villa while Kristoffer Ajer could leave for Southampton in a £20m deal.

Bolingoli may also be departing on a temporary basis and with that in mind, a replacement will be needed.

According to The Daily Mail, that could be Leeds United full-back Barry Douglas.

Celtic have reportedly held talks in a bid to bring him to Parkhead this summer.

According to Transfermarkt, the left-back is rated at just £1.8m so he shouldn't cost Nick Hammond and his recruitment team too much.

The left side of defence has clearly been an area Celtic are keen to improve in with Hearts' Aaron Hickey linked as well.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Celtic's only viable option on the left-hand side of defence at the moment is Greg Taylor.

Considering how many games usually occupy their season, signing some back-up or someone to replace him would be a very wise idea.

However, what the Hoops need to work out is whether Douglas or Hickey is the better option.

It's a toss-up of many things. Do you go for experience over potential or sell on value vs instant impact?

Douglas is the senior professional here and it's remarkable to think he has just one Scotland cap to his name.

Barry Douglas

Hailed as "fantastic" by former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan, he has had a wonderful career at the age of 30.

He has 51 assists from 205 games as a left-back, a phenomenal record that even someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold would be proud of.

Hickey, on the other hand, doesn't possess the same sort of attacking qualities. He's still only 18 so still has plenty of room to grow, but if you're looking for an instant impact, Douglas is probably your man.

Taylor, after all, is only 22 himself.
