Newcastle United face a pivotal few weeks.

After avoiding relegation relatively comfortably last season, the focus for the Magpies will be on dodging a battle to avoid the drop this term.

The bottom half of the Premier League is incredibly competitive, and with many clubs already making moves to strengthen their squads, it's imperative that Newcastle don't fall behind.

Steve Bruce has already added Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick to his side.

However the feeling among supporters is that they'll need to do much more in the market if they're to kick on this term.

Signing a defender appears to be a priority at the moment, with Rob Holding one of the names being linked with a move to St James' Park.

But according to reports it seems that United could be closing in on a different target.

Reports from Turkish newspaper Aksam, as quoted by TeamTalk, claim that Newcastle are on the verge of a deal for Marcao.

The Galatasaray defender has been the subject of numerous bids from the Magpies this summer, with at least one offer being rejected.

However it's said that an offer of €19m plus 10% of any future sale has been submitted, with the feeling being that the offer will be accepted.

Atalanta are also said to be interested in a move, while West Ham were linked with an interest earlier this year.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Newcastle United fans are crying out for their club to invest in players.

Following the collapse of the £300million takeover bid, the Tynesiders have been in limbo as they wait to hear what will happen next with their club.

With Mike Ashley wanted to offload the club, it's unlikely that he'll be looking to spend big in the transfer market.

The free transfers for Gillespie and Hendrick certainly back that up.

But there's a real need to strengthen if Newcastle are to avoid the drop.

Marcao may be highly-rated in Turkey, but it would be a big surprise to see the Tynesiders splash out such a substantial sum on the player.

The defender is seemingly keen on a move after following the club's official account on Instagram, however it remains to be seen what this means for a deal.
