West Ham's summer has been far from impressive so far, just like their 2019/20 campaign was.

As a Hammers supporter, you would have been counting on some quick additions to arrive after their dismal season.

Of course, the Irons finished in 16th place, narrowly escaping relegation to the Championship.

They've had little to celebrate since that point either.

Tomas Soucek may have arrived permanently but it seems as though David Moyes and co have been more intent on ridding their deadwood, than spending money.

Shambolic goalkeeper Roberto has finally fled the scene on a permanent basis, while Albian Ajeti and Jordan Hugill also left for Celtic and Norwich.

Will West Ham sign someone themselves? They still have plenty of time but the Premier League season begins in only a few weeks.

Fortunately, it looks as though they're looking in the right areas for added firepower next term.

Reports over the weekend (via Sport Witness), claimed that West Ham were eyeing a move for Porto forward Moussa Marega.

This is hardly unsurprising. The forward nearly signed for the Hammers in 2019 after agreeing personal terms but the move collapsed after Porto manager Sérgio Conceição insisted he wanted to keep Marega in Portugal.

However, the Hammers are now keen again and with the player's contract expiring in a year, he could be easier to obtain.

At present, he is rated at £18m according to Transfermarkt.

Portuguse outlet A Bola reported on Sunday (via Sport Witness) that the player is looking for a change of scene. His agent, Aziz Ben Aissa, said: "Marega is looking for a good project at FC Porto or in England."

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

When evaluating West Ham's squad, the need for extra defenders stands out. Last term, they conceded the second-most goals in the entire division. Only Norwich had a worse record than David Moyes' side.

That being said, their record in front of goal was also pretty dismal.

They may have plenty of options in the final third but none stand out as players who can transform the side, certainly based on last term anyway.

Sebastien Haller signed for a club-record fee last summer but only scored seven Premier League goals. Michail Antonio netted ten in the league but four of those came in one remarkable game against the Canaries.

Based on that, West Ham certainly need some more firepower from somewhere.

Could Marega be their man? Quite possibly. He netted just 15 times in 2019/20 but has 36 goals across the last two seasons for Porto.

Even if he just takes some of the burden from Haller's shoulders, he'd be a worthwhile addition.

Given his contract situation, he shouldn't cost Moyes too much either.
