Newcastle United are facing a pivotal summer.

Following the collapse of their £300million takeover, supporters have been left aggrieved at the state of their football club.

While the club comfortably avoided relegation last term, there's a feeling on Tyneside that the club could be in trouble this season unless they significantly up their efforts.

Of course many supporters are pushing for a takeover as they look to see the back of Mike Ashley, but put simply the club need to improve themselves on the pitch.

Steve Bruce did a decent job given the resources at his disposal, but this term he'll need to strengthen.

Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick have already joined the club on free transfers, but it's unlikely that this will be enough to see them out of danger.

Fans are crying out for the club to splash the cash as they seek high quality players, and it certainly seems that Newcastle have taken note.

Reports from Chronicle Live have claimed that the Magpies have entered the race for Callum Wilson.

Valued at £30million, the Bournemouth man is available following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle face competition from Aston Villa for the England striker, who was described as having 'unlimited potential' by Eddie Howe, but it seems that the Tynesiders could have a trump card in striking a deal.

It's claimed that Newcastle are looking to offer Matt Ritchie as part of the deal to bring the striker to St James' Park.

Ritchie played for the Cherries before joining the Magpies, and could be seen as an attractive addition for the South Coast side as they look to secure an immediate return to the top flight this term.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This could be an ideal solution to a long-term problem for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been targeting a decent striker for several years, and Callum Wilson is as close to a guaranteed success as they're likely to get.

Given the ongoing takeover drama, Mike Ashley will be reluctant to spend more than he needs to on a new player, and that's why an exchange for Matt Ritchie could be shrewd.

Of course this depends on what Bournemouth's motivations are.

If they're looking to raise funds then perhaps a move to Aston Villa could be preferred, with Dean Smith's side seemingly open to a cash-only deal for the striker.

But given the Cherries' affinity for Matt Ritchie, the proposal from Newcastle could be very appealing indeed as they look to build a promotion-winning side.
