Solskjaer is a huge admirer of the versatile midfielder, having been to watch him play on numerous occasions.
But according to talkSPORT pundit Michael Gray, United supporters should pump the breaks on their excitement surrounding Van de Beek.
Former Sunderland player Gray believes Man United’s new signing won’t move the club forward and will be a squad player in Solskjaer’s side.
Gray even thinks Van de Beek will be behind McTominay in the pecking order.
“Is he Man United moving forward? I personally don’t think he is,” Gray said on the radio station.
“Because I think McTominay is going to be there for the next five, six years, maybe even longer than that.
That’s where football is right now. You’re buying a squad player for £40m.
Unsurprisingly, Gray’s comments didn't go down well with Man United fans...
