Tottenham Hotspur are looking much closer to home for transfer targets this summer.

The North London side usually scour Europe and the world as they look to find the best of the best players who could improve their side moving forward.

But this year is completely different.

As well as the various restrictions over moving between countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic, funds are also at a premium given the impact on the global economy.

That means that where Tottenham would have spent astronomical sums on a future star, the sums being discussed will be merely ridiculous.

As a result Spurs have been shopping around the Premier League this summer after signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty from Southampton, Burnley and Wolves respectively.

But it seems that they aren't done.

Several strikers have been linked as the club look to provide competition for Harry Kane in attack, and according to Alasdair Gold of Football London, it seems that Chris Wood of Burnley may well be a surprise target.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold said: "People might laugh at Chris Wood as a potential [signing] but I’d heard that Spurs are just keeping a little eye on him.

“[He’s] 28, I think he scored 14 Premier League goals last season, he’s a big, bustling, Mourinho-esque striker.

“I think he’s got a few years left on his deal, I don’t think he’d be cheap and I think Burnley would be quite loath to lose him, but as a backup striker or someone that Kane can feed off, I don’t think that’s a bad deal at all.

"I think he’s a younger version of a [Olivier] Giroud-type.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Well, this would certainly be a surprise.

Let's get this straight, I'd be hugely surprised if this was a deal that came to fruition.

However you can see where Tottenham's logic is.

Premier League experience is a big asset, and with a player such as Chris Wood you have a player who knows how to give the opposition a torrid time.

The Burnley man is a human battering ram who will give defenders a tough day at the office, and that's exactly what Jose Mourinho looks for in a striker.

I'd imagine that the Clarets will rate the forward quite highly, and that means that Spurs will have to splash out if they're to secure his services.
