Newcastle United are stepping up their transfer efforts as the new season looms.

The Premier League campaign kicks off in less than two weeks and that means that clubs are moving frantically to get their squads in the best shape possible for the big curtain-raiser.

For the Magpies that could prove to be a difficult job.

Following the breakdown of the £300m takeover of the club this summer, there's been a feeling of uncertainty surrounding the club with fans unsure of what the club are planning for the season ahead.

Free transfers for Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick have painted a bleak picture thus far, suggesting that the summer could be filled with bargain bucket deals and loan signings to keep costs down.

Based on reports, that certainly seems to be the case with Leicestershire Live claiming that Newcastle are eyeing a loan switch for Demarai Gray.

The winger has seemingly fallen down the pecking order with the Foxes, meaning that he could be available on a temporary basis.

Gray is still highly-rated by Brendan Rodgers, who discussed his thoughts on the star in the latter stages of last term.

Quoted by Leicestershire Live, Rodgers said: “He’s obviously a player we want to keep.

“When he’s focused and concentrated, and then plays to that level (of his substitute performance against Watford), you see the impact he has.

“He’s got wonderful talent. He can dribble, he can do everything. With Demarai, it’s always been about that end product, creating goals and assisting goals on a regular basis, and then working with an intensity to fit in with the structure of the team.

“I really enjoy working with him, he’s a good guy, loves his football, and wants to improve.

“It is hard, because everyone wants to play, especially when the team’s been playing well and in form. He hasn’t started as many games as he would want to but he's always kept a great attitude."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

A move for Demarai Gray would be great for Newcastle United.

While it might not be the big-money signing that supporters crave, a loan deal for a player of such quality can not be sniffed at.

With first team opportunities limited at the King Power Stadium, the winger has the opportunity to make himself a fan favourite at St James' Park.

I'd love to see this one come to fruition, but it's early days and until we hear more it will probably marked down as merely a rumour.

That won't stop Newcastle fans from dreaming though.
