Many football fans never dreamed they would see the day that Lionel Messi would leave Barcelona in rather acrimonious circumstances.
The Argentine superstar has spent the last 16 years in Catalonia, establishing himself as possibly the greatest player of all time.
Most of us believed that Messi would end his career at Barcelona and retire at the club with the fans singing his name.
Sadly, that outcome is beginning to look ever more unlikely. After a disastrous 2019/20 campaign, Messi has stated his desire to leave Barcelona this summer.
It's an announcement that has shocked the footballing world and people are now debating which party is in the wrong.
Most believe Messi deserves better after Barcelona's decline in recent years under president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
However, there are those who believe the 33-year-old is betraying Barcelona and Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre certainly falls into that bracket.
Speaking on Spanish TV programme 'El Chiringuito de Jugones', Aguirre stated that Messi leaving Catalonia would be the 'greatest betrayal in football history'.
"For me, Messi is carrying out the greatest betrayal in the history of football," he said, per Marca.
"Barcelona fans don't deserve that. Messi is ditching them. It's the moment for Leo Messi to hold a press conference and say: 'I'll stay because I have a memory and I know what this club is for me'.
"Messi is jumping off the boat when it's sinking. Messi should not leave now."
Does Aguirre have a point? It's a debate that will rage on for some time. On the face of it, Messi does appear to be leaving the club at their lowest point for over a decade.
However, it's a fact that the Argentine superstar has carried an underperforming Barca team in recent years and the board have been unwilling to offer him the support he has needed.
Messi deserves better than that and while some will label his desire to leave a 'betrayal', it's clear that a fresh start is what's needed for the 33-year-old to thrive in the remaining years of his career.
