Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille.

The Brazilian defender has joined the Gunners on a five-year deal for a fee thought to be worth around £27m.

It's a signing that has left Arsenal fans understandably excited. Gabriel is revered as one of the finest young defenders in world football after an impressive 2019/20 campaign in Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old also played the full 90 minutes in all six of Lille's Champions League group games last season, which included two meetings with Chelsea.

Lille lost both games against the Blues 2-1, but Gabriel still managed to showcase his talents and his highlights from the home match against Chelsea are pretty darn good.

Not bad, eh? He even gets the better of his new teammate Willian on several occasions.

Gabriel's power in the air is evident for all to see and his positioning at the near post to cut out crosses will be a valuable asset to Arsenal.

He's also very capable with the ball at his feet and can play a wide range of passes with his left peg.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown was full of praise for Gabriel when discussing the youngster's progress at Lille on BT Sport after watching him in the 2019/20 Champions League.

Gabriel in action vs Chelsea

"I saw him play against Chelsea for Lille last season, I went out to watch him," Keown said.

"Magnificent player, I think he’s the future. He sees danger and he’s a leader. He’s strong, powerful, I sincerely hope this transfer does go through and he becomes an Arsenal player.

"That will really secure them at the back whether it’s going to be a four or a three I think this lad can play in either system."

The prospect of Gabriel, William Saliba and David Luiz operating as a back three in 2020/21 is a very exciting one on paper.

Arsenal's defence may not be the butt of the jokes for much longer.
