Leeds United are closing in on their first top flight fixture for 16 years.

After such a significant period in the wilderness you can hardly blame supporters for being excited at the prospect of rubbing shoulders with the biggest and best clubs in the land.

That's not meant to disrespect the teams in the Championship, but Leeds certainly proved that they were head and shoulder above them all.

To finish the season 10 points above your nearest rivals is quite an achievement, and deserves huge amounts of respect.

What's even more impressive is that Marcelo Bielsa achieved that success with a relatively small group of players, showing that he was right to have true faith in each member of his squad.

While the decision not to chop and change is down to the Argentine's preferred method of keeping a consistent side, injuries also played their part.

Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw were two players who missed the promotion run-in last term as a result of serious injuries.

In fact the latter was absent for most of the campaign.

But with a Premier League opener against Liverpool to look forward to, both players will have been targeting a return for the trip to Anfield - something that Yorkshire Evening Post writer Graham Smyth revealed shouldn't be too far out of reach for the pair.

Speaking on the All Stats Aren't We podcast, Smyth said: “Kalvin Phillips is joining up with England so you have to believe he’s fit.

“Forshaw, the last I heard, he wasn’t fully involved with full-on training but they were getting to the point where they were looking at that.

“It’s been a long, long injury… The noises have been positive but I’m not sure he’d be ready for Liverpool.

“I’m really hopeful we’ll get good news on him soon.”

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This is great news for Leeds United fans.

Kalvin Phillips looks likely to play a massive role in the club's return to the Premier League and so to have him fit is a big plus.

Of course he must come through the international break unscathed, but hopefully he'll be ready to hit the ground running.

As for Adam Forshaw it will be a big moment when he returns to action.

After a nightmare year he'll be hoping to put his injury woes behind him, and making his return in the top flight will be particularly sweet.

If he can stay fit then he has the potential to play a key role for the club both on and off the pitch.
