Newcastle United closing in on major transfer breakthrough

Newcastle United finally look to have clicked into gear this summer.

Things got off to the worst possible start following the end of the last campaign as their takeover deal collapsed in dramatic fashion.

The Magpies were set to be taken over in a £300m deal and become the richest club in the Premier League, but that dream was ruined with one click of a finger.

While talk of reviving a takeover has stuttered and started over recent weeks, there's an acceptance that the club need to focus on matters on the field for once, as opposed to what happens off it.

While Newcastle comfortably avoided relegation last season, the club need to significantly strengthen if they're to ensure that they don't get dragged into the mix this term.

Leeds United, West Brom and Fulham all promise to strengthen significantly, while the likes of Aston Villa, Brighton and West Ham will also be looking to kick on.

That means that it's essential that Newcastle get things right.

Thus far it's been free transfers for Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick which have captured attention, and it seems that these bargain deals could become an ongoing trend based on a fresh report.

Shields Gazette have claimed that a deal is 'very close' for Ryan Fraser.

The ex-Bournemouth winger is a free agent after letting his contract on the south coast expire.

Several clubs have been linked with a move for the player, including the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham.

However their interest appeared to subside as last season progressed.

This summer it's been the Magpies, West Ham and Aston Villa who have led the charge, and it seems that a breakthrough is near.

Miles Starforth is a reporter who closely covers the fortunes of the Magpies, and he revealed on Wednesday morning that a deal was edging nearer.

Starforth tweeted: "Understand Newcastle 'very close' to an agreement with free agent Ryan Fraser."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be a major breakthrough for Newcastle United.

While supporters want the club to splash the cash a little bit, there's no arguing that Ryan Fraser is a player of immense quality.

The last 12 months haven't gone exactly to plan for him, but that shouldn't diminish what he's capable of.

With the player seemingly set to join on a free transfer it eliminates the threat that would be attached to a sizeable transfer fee.

Steve Bruce will be delighted if he can get this one over the line, and I'm sure that supporters will love seeing the assist-machine strutting his stuff at St James' Park.
