The rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will reportedly headline a UFC event early next year.
Reports have suggested that the two will return to the Octagon to fight once again as a main fight for a UFC pay-per-view, and it could happen as early as December, although January is the more likely date.
UFC president Dana White has confirmed that the rematch is being targeted, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.
TMZ were first to announce the news, stating that the fight would take place at UFC 256 on December 12.
However, contracts are “yet to be signed” and the official date “still needs to be worked out”. Reports are suggesting January 2021 is a better option for the fight.
The first encounter between the two athletes, headlining UFC 244, ended as a victory for Masvidal via TKO.
It was announced that the welterweight fight would be for the BMF title, crowning the “Baddest Mother****** in UFC”.
The doctor was forced to stop the fight in the third round, due to a cut above Diaz’s right eye.
Post-fight, both corners expressed their interest in another meeting, but the rematch never came together.
Dana White stated his plans for a possible rematch by saying: “(Masvidal) wants to defend it against Diaz,” referring to the BMF title he won from their first encounter.
“He wants to put it up versus Nate again.”
White also confirmed that the fight would headline a UFC event with the title being put on the line.
Masvidal’s latest fight took place on 'Fight Island' in July this year, taking a championship fight against Kamaru Usman with just six days’ notice, replacing Gilbert Burns who had tested positive for coronavirus.
As we all know, Usman got the win on the night, but Masvidal certainly impressed.
Meanwhile, Nate Diaz has not returned to action in the Octagon since his first clash with Masvidal, back in November 2019.
