A fan called into radio station talkSPORT on Wednesday to share his opinion on the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate.

The caller - a Reading fan named David - claimed that Ronaldo sits on top of the throne because he’s flourished in three of Europe’s biggest leagues, while Messi has only done it in one.

“Honestly, if [Messi] does it any other country, he'd be known as the best footballer in the world,” David said.

“That's why Ronaldo is the best footballer in the world. He's done it in the Premier League, Spain and Italy.”

The Messi vs Ronaldo argument is a fun one to have with your mates. But what do those who actually play the game think?

A Twitter thread has emerged detailing the opinion of 137 - yes, one hundred and thirty-seven - professional players and managers on the debate.

Pep Guardiola, Sir Alex Ferguson, Eden Hazard, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Jurgen Klopp and many more have all had their say.

For the sake of brevity, we’re not going to include every single tweet in the thread. We’d enter next week if we did that.

But we’ll include some of our favourite tweets and provide a link to the entire thread at the bottom.

The thread features a score count as well, and there was an overwhelming victor…

So Messi prevails by a score of 103-34. Wow.

Among those to name the Argentinian as their choice are Beckham, Neymar, Ronaldo Nazario, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.

Michael Owen, Georginio Wijnaldum, Roy Keane and Bernd Leno were part of the 34 to side with Ronaldo.

Some have refused to answer the debate.

“In the end Ronaldo and Messi are the ones who have been winning all the individual awards in the world of football, that says it all about their tremendous individual talent as footballers,” Luis Figo said.

“I would never choose between them.”

But for those who did have an answer, the majority opted with six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi.

Unlike with our Reading fan David, the fact that Messi hasn’t done it in any other country besides Spain didn’t put off the likes of John Terry, Aaron Ramsey, Mario Balotelli or Paul Pogba.
