Daniel Levy is in no danger of clocking up too many air miles this summer.

Tottenham have little to spend and consequently, it appears as though they're operating exclusively in the domestic market.

That's going off evidence of their confirmed transfers so far.

They've already done deals to bring Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty to north London from Southampton and Wolves respectively.

However, they also moved to bring in Joe Hart on a free transfer.

With switches for Demarai Gray and Josh King in the pipeline, it doesn't appear as though the Lilywhites are casting their net too far afield.

That goes the same for another of their striker targets.

Joe Hart

The Daily Mail revealed in early August that Spurs were plotting a rather surprising move for Watford forward Troy Deeney.

The experienced attacker isn't the most prolific of goalscorers so one has to wonder why Tottenham want to sign him.

And, if they are still looking at Deeney, they'll now have to fight off competition from elsewhere.

That's because the same outlet are reporting further interest from West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies, who were recently promoted to the Premier League, are now in talks with Watford to bring him to the Hawthorns.

No fee is mentioned, but according to Transfermarkt, Deeney is valued at a price of just £5.85m.

Spurs had previously been seeking a loan deal for the Englishman but any hope of securing his services now look slim on the ground.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

47 goals in 163 Premier League appearances tells the story of Deeney's top-flight career.

In practice, it's not a shabby record, especially in a side which lacks attacking potency.

Last season, the 32-year-old racked up an impressive ten goals as the Hornets fought against relegation and then eventually were sent back down to the Championship.

It's rather peculiar that Spurs have been targeting an ageing player now in the Championship, but if they do beat West Brom to his services, they'd have an excellent plan B in attack, something they've arguably been missing.

Speaking about Deeney earlier this season, former Watford boss Nigel Pearson labelled his qualities in the best possible way. "He loves the pressure, he loves to be able to make a fight of a game and he’s always a handful to play against," he said

Troy Deeney

By definition, Deeney is a truly robust forward. He always gives 110% and he is by no means afraid to upset the apple cart.

Tottenham fans should remember fondly the time where the striker claimed Arsenal lacked 'cojones' after Watford beat them in October 2017.

Adept from the penalty spot and capable of winning a colossal 7.3 aerial duels per game, there would be little wrong with Spurs signing Deeney.

If they secure him ahead of West Brom, there will be few reasons to laugh.
