After a rather quiet start to the transfer window, Manchester United finally joined the party yesterday by announcing the arrival of Donny van de Beek from Dutch side Ajax.

You could have forgiven United fans for panicking about their squad going into the 2020/2021 season with the lack of movement in the window, especially considering rivals Chelsea and Arsenal were both making shrewd additions.

Frank Lampard's men have signed strongly and quickly, adding; Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to their ranks. That's not even mentioning the potential arrivals of Kai Havertz and a new goalkeeper.

As for Arsenal, they have to close the gap on United this season, and they've tried doing that by signing William Saliba and Gabriel; two central defenders that will certainly help solidify things at the back.

But that's enough about United's rivals, what about them themselves?

Well, as we know, at the time of writing this article, all they've done in the window is secure Van de Beek, but they have been linked with some other big-name players, as you'd expect with a club the size of Manchester United.

Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund was the heavy target early doors, but that seems to have petered off in recent weeks, while RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has also been touted.

What all these rumours and potential signings did do is got us thinking about how United looked when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first took over.

Cast your minds back to December 22, 2018 and the Norwegian was taking control of his first game at United; an away trip to former club Cardiff City funnily enough.

Although he was only deemed 'interim manager' at the time, it was still his first game in charge, and it was a successful one at that.

United won 5-1 that night with Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford all on the scoresheet.

But what was the United starting XI on that night, and what could the starting XI look like for Solskjaer this season?

Well, against Cardiff, United looked like this: David de Gea, Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Lingard, Rashford, Martial.

(The formation may not be 100% accurate from the night, but the players involved in the XI are correct... you can also ignore the numbers on the back.)

However, when it comes to their first game this season, at home to Crystal Palace, United could actually line-up looking like this: De Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw, Van de Beek, Pogba, Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Rashford, Martial.

Say what you want about Solskjaer and his managerial skills, but he's certainly improved United's XI since he arrived at Old Trafford.

When you take out the likes of Jones, Young, Matic, Herrera and Lingard and replace them with Maguire, Wan-Bissaka, Van de Beek, Greenwood and Fernandes, you know you're doing something right.

Manchester United may not be title challengers in the 2020/2021 season, but they will certainly be a lot closer than they were last season and the season before that.
