Liverpool begin their Premier League title defence on Saturday, September 12.

Jurgen Klopp's side host newly-promoted Leeds United on the opening weekend and will aim to pick up where they left off - by dominating the top-flight.

The Reds won the Premier League for the first-ever time in 2019/20, finishing a ridiculous 18 points clear of second-place Manchester City.

In fact, they had the title wrapped up by Christmas.

So to defend that crown, Liverpool should be strengthening, right?

Well, it doesn't seem they're too fussed about doing that.

The club have had a rather slow transfer window and a move for Bayern Munich's Thiago is about the only thing fans have been getting excited about.

Liverpool have been linked with Thiago

Good squads win titles - but only great ones go on to defend them - and rather than looking to increase their depth for next season, Liverpool are about to offload as many as 10 players.

While all the teams around them strengthening, is that really the best play? Only time will tell, of course.

According to Goal, Klopp is happy to let the following 10 players go - either permanently or on-loan:

  • Loris Karius
  • Harry Wilson
  • Sheyi Ojo
  • Marko Grujic
  • Yasser Larouci
  • Rhian Brewster
  • Ben Woodburn
  • Taiwo Awoniyi
  • Kamil Grabara
  • Nat Phillips
Karius is no longer needed by Liverpool

It's important to make it clear that those names above are fringe players at best.

Liverpool were never going to offload the men that were key to their first-ever Premier League title win, were they?

But fans may well be worried by seeing as many as 10 players leave. Squad depth is incredibly important these days and rotation will be key.

Klopp should be strengthening his squad, not cutting it

We even saw it last season when Klopp had to take his first-team away for the Club World Cup, leaving the youth and reserve players to feature in the League Cup.

Liverpool will just be praying there won't be another fixture pile-up. But if there is, things could get complicated next season...
