It's official: Lionel Messi has confirmed that he's staying at Barcelona - but he's not happy about it.
The Argentine has confirmed, during an exclusive interview with Goal:
"I wasn't happy and I wanted to leave. I have not been allowed this in any way and I will stay at the club so as not to get into a legal dispute.
"The management of the club led by Bartomeu is a disaster.
"I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not.
"Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season.
"This is the reason why I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million clause, and that this is impossible."
Wow, that's quite the bombshell.
The news comes after another crazy day of discussions, which first saw Jorge Messi release a statement of his own, suggesting that his son's €700m buyout clause is invalid.
La Liga quickly hit back to deny that, stating that their position on the matter is unchanged - that is - they believe the clause is still valid and must be paid.
That back-and-forth probably led Messi to make his final decision.
He could battle it out in court with the club that he's been with for almost two decades and risk ruining his legacy, or he could back down and agree to stay.
The Argentine chose the second option and will be a Barcelona player for the 2020/21 season.
