Swindon's relegation from npower League One was finally confirmed with a 3-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Neil Mellor scored twice to add to an early Darren Potter goal with Swindon midfielder Jonathan Douglas grabbing the only goal for The Robins who are now marooned at the foot of the table.

Southampton beat 10-man Hartlepool 2-0 to win their eighth successive home league game and maintain their grasp on the second automatic promotion spot.

After an even first 45 minutes the Saints took the lead through a Rickie Lambert penalty five minutes into the second half with Hartlepool defender Sam Collins sent off after receiving his second yellow card for upending Lambert in the area before Jose Fonte scored the second late on.

Huddersfield remain behind Southampton by virtue of goal difference after they made hard work of beating relegation-threatened Dagenham and Redbridge 2-1 at the Galpharm Stadium.

Jordan Rhodes was the hero for the home fans as he scored a first-half brace with the Daggers' French defender Romain Vincelot scoring in between Rhodes' efforts.

Earlier in the day champions Brighton came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw at Colchester. Ian Henderson opened the scoring for the home side after a comedy of errors in the Brighton defence before Ashley Barnes' volley 18 minutes from time earned Gus Poyet's side a point.

Plymouth were the only team in the relegation zone to pick up points as Simon Walton's 21st-minute goal gave them an invaluable 1-0 win over play-off hopefuls MK Dons and keep their survival bid on track.

Bristol Rovers threw away the lead to lose 2-1 at Bournemouth as both teams finished with 10 men. Wayne Brown's fourth-minute goal gave the visitors the lead before his team-mate David McCracken and Bournemouth's Danny Hollands both saw red before the break.
