Rangers FC are still in the hunt to sign 25 y/o winger

Rangers FC and Steven Gerrard may as well be jumping for joy right now. The Ibrox side have been excellent this season and fully deserve their place at the top of the SPFL.

The Gers are six points ahead of rivals Celtic and they are well and truly in the mood to spoil the party.

Their nemesis may have two games in hand but arguably, Rangers have never had a better opportunity to reclaim the title in the last ten years.

It has been a bumpy decade for the Gers who witnessed supreme financial trouble at the start of it and had to witness Celtic win league crown after league crown.

However, they now look back at their very best and after keeping a sixth clean sheet in a row against Hamilton last weekend, have taken plenty of confidence into the international break.

Celtic are known for going unbeaten in recent seasons but this time it is Rangers who look unbreakable.

Fans will still be on the side of caution, however. They fell away in quite some style at the back end of 2019/20. Alfredo Morelos had scored just once in 2020 until a few weeks ago and their defence left a lot to be desired.

They have changed their fortunes around, however, and are clearly boosted by new signings.

Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten joined the likes of Jon McLaughlin and Leon Balogun who have made the squad far more balanced.

However, they could sign another impressive attacker before the window is up - that's if you believe Football Insider.

Earlier this summer, they reported that Rangers were plotting a move for Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy.

Competition has since emerged from Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and Stoke in the race to land the 25-year-old on loan.

It's thought the Gers still want him but Newcastle may not allow Murphy to depart until closer to the October deadline. The Magpies want to strengthen their squad before letting him leave.

Murphy was valued at around £10m in 2017 but his valuation is now just £3m.

Although it'll come as a disappointment to see that a deal for Murphy may not be concluded for another month, they must bide their time with this one.

Rangers are also reportedly interested in winger Patrick Roberts, but when comparing the two players in recent years, Murphy simply has to be the number one priority.

Yes, Roberts has experience of Scottish football, but he scored just once last season while on loan at Norwich and Middlesbrough.

His form has been poor in comparison to the Newcastle flanker who was a vibrant ball of energy on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last term.

Murphy beat the goalkeeper on nine occasions in 2019/20 and also created six assists for his teammates.

He also finished the campaign in devastating fashion, scoring four goals in his last five outings.

At the age of 25, Murphy is coming into his prime and could be a force to be reckoned with at Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
