Newcastle United face an anxious few days this summer.

It's been a pre-season like no other for every club in world football, but for the Magpies it's been something else entirely.

Following the collapse of the £300million takeover earlier this year, things certainly seem to have stagnated on Tyneside.

Mike Ashley is seemingly reluctant to put his hand in his pocket as he looks to fast-track a sale, but matters on the pitch may dictate a need for urgency.

With the Premier League season kicking off in just a few days time, supporters are starting to get nervous.

The battle to avoid the drop could be incredibly competitive this term, with Newcastle among the sides at risk.

That is why there's a real need to strengthen.

Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick have already joined the club, while the likes of Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson have been heavily linked.

But according to reports it's another player who is set to complete a move.

Reports have claimed that Newcastle are interested in a move for Rogerio.

The Sassuolo full-back is in-demand after moving to the Italian side from Juventus last summer, making 15 appearances in the process.

The Brazilian is being targeted as an option to slot into defence, and according to Fabrizio Romano, it's a deal that could be completed soon.

Responding to a supporter's question Romano said: "Almost done. €14m. Rogerio will join Newcastle soon."

It remains to be seen what this update means for the pursuit of Jamal Lewis.

The Norwich City man is said to be a top target for the Magpies, who have had a £13.5million offer accepted by the Championship side.

Whether Newcastle will look to sign both players remains to be seen.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Newcastle United supporters will be thrilled if they can get this done.

The club have not spent any money so far this summer, and that has left fans feeling frustrated and worried for what's to come.

Thankfully that looks set to change.

Rogerio would certainly add some quality to Steve Bruce's side, and that's why fans will be excited about this deal.

Whether they would prefer to sign Jamal Lewis, I'm not sure.

But with us yet to find out if it's a case of one player signing or both, it could be an exciting time for the club.

Let's just hope that they can get these deals wrapped up before the season gets underway.
