Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a big season.

Last term didn't exactly go to plan for the North London side who had high hopes after reaching the Champions League final the year before.

Mauricio Pochettino was hoping to take the club to the next level, but a range of factors meant that it was a campaign that saw them swimming against the tide.

Jose Mourinho came in to the club with the reputation of being 'a proven winner', but even he could only just see the club to a top six finish in the Premier League.

For long spells it seemed like even Europa League qualification wasn't to be, so a place in Europe's second competition was seen as a resounding success on the balance of the season's fortunes.

But let's not pretend that that's where the standards are set.

Mourinho's target this term will be to finish in the top four of the Premier League and qualify for next season's Champions League.

Anything less will be seen as a failure.

As such the club have taken great strides to strengthen their squad, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty joining the club.

It's believed that a frontman could be next on the list.

That man is Metz striker Habib Diallo who, according to Football London, one target seems to be ticking a lot of the boxes.

They wrote: "Football.london understands that one striker Tottenham are still interested in, among a couple of targets, is 25-year-old Metz striker Habib Diallo.

"The 6ft 1ins Senegal international scored 12 goals in 26 Ligue 1 starts last season in a struggling, newly-promoted Metz side and is another who fits in with the strong character profile of transfers this summer, having captained Metz for many of their games last season.

"Diallo fired Metz back into the top flight the season before with 26 goals in 37 league matches.

"He has two years left on his contract at the French club and Tottenham made enquiries about him during the January transfer window with the striker keen to link up with Mourinho."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Tottenham Hotspur are desperate for a striker.

For too long the club have been overly reliant on Harry Kane as the club's goalscoring talisman.

That needs to change if they're to challenge on all fronts.

Habib Diallo seems like an ideal candidate.

As a player with a decent goalscoring tally, the Metz striker could be an ideal option to provide Jose Mourinho with an alternative option.

Whether the moves comes off is a different matter, but it's one that we'll certainly be tracking with interest.
