This could be a season that goes down in history for Rangers FC.

With rivals Celtic eyeing a 10th successive league title the pressure is firmly on the Bhoys to put their names in the record books.

For Steven Gerrard's side they are underdogs and happy about it.

The Gers are not expected to win the title, but face the prospect of stopping their fiercest competitors from reaching such a landmark.

Of course it's been a difficult time in recent years for Rangers, but they're finally back to a place where they are competing at the top.

Sitting pretty at the top of the league - three points clear of second and six clear of Celtic, life is good as a Rangers fan.

But while the focus is on this season and trying to beat their bitter rivals, one eye will certainly be on the years to come.

Gerrard's side have made a real effort to focus their transfer activity on signing young, high potential signings who will grow in ability and value over the years.

But they're also keen to sign players who are perhaps undervalued by their current teams.

One man who they are reported to be interested in is John Lundstram.

The versatile Sheffield United man was a key player for Chris Wilder's side last term as they exceeded all expectations in the Premier League.

With the Blades looking to kick on, Lundstram appears to be a player who could be eased out of the first team fold at Bramall Lane, and that's where Rangers come into the equation.

Lundstram has less than 12 months left on his contract, meaning that in January he will be free to discuss terms with clubs outside of England over a Bosman deal for next summer.

While Rangers would be interested in a deal now, Alan Nixon of The Sun has tweeted about the club's interest and claims that they could look to open talks with him at the turn of the year over a free transfer for next summer.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This could be a great signing for Rangers FC.

Described by Chris Wilder as exemplary, John Lundstram is a player who has been key to Sheffield United's recent success, and so he deserves plenty of credit.

That said, it seems likely that he'll move on before too long.

A move to Ibrox would be a great opportunity for him, and for Rangers, they'd be getting a really useful player.

Versatile by nature, the defender/midfielder would be a real asset for Steven Gerrard's side.

If they can monitor the situation and ensure that they beat any competitors to his signature by striking a deal in January, this will be fantastic business.
