West Ham step up interest in 'outstanding' ace

West Ham United supporters aren't entirely happy at the moment.

After a season in which the club avoided relegation with just a couple of games to spare, the hope was that efforts would be doubled to improve this summer.

If that doesn't happen then the club could be preparing for a very long, hard season.

While incomings have been limited to turning the loan deal for Tomas Soucek into a permanent switch, it's the outgoings that have really ruffled some feathers.

While Jordan Hugill and Albian Ajeti have both moved on, it's the exit of Grady Diangana which has riled supporters.

The starlet was tipped as a key part of West Ham's future, but was allowed to leave the club to join a side who will inevitably be competing with the Hammers to avoid relegation, West Brom.

That led to outrage on social media with club captain Mark Noble tweeting about his anger at the decision to let him leave.

But with that money now in the pockets of West Ham, the focus has to be on strengthening.

Plenty of position have been listed as areas to improve, one of which is in central defence.

According to reports from The Athletic, there's one man who is certainly topping the list of potential targets.

That man is James Tarkowski.

The Burnley man has established himself as one of the best defenders outside of the top six in recent years.

Valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, West Ham have reportedly made an offer of £22million, rising to £27million if certain criteria are met.

It remains to be seen whether this will be accepted, but Burnley are unlikely to want to lose him for a cut-price fee.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

This would be a fantastic signing if West Ham United could pull it off.

Described as 'outstanding' by Sean Dyche, James Tarkowski is one of the most under-rated defenders in the Premier League, in my opinion.

The fact that he's been such a key part of Burnley's resolute defence shows just how good he is.

David Moyes needs a defender who will instantly solidify his team, and Tarkowski will certainly bring that.

I'm not sure that Sean Dyche will want to see, and in truth it remains to be seen if the 27-year-old will be tempted by a move to a side who will be battling to avoid the drop.

But if West Ham offer enough then it could be a deal that comes to fruition.
