Italian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton checked up on Charles Leclerc after horror crash at Monza

In audio footage released, Lewis Hamilton can be heard asking his team through his radio if fellow Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc is OK after he suffered a serious-looking crash during the race at Monza.

On lap 23 of the Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Leclerc was in a high-speed crash against the barriers at the exit of Parabolica – the final bend in the Italian circuit before the start/finish line.

The situation went from bad to worse for Ferrari in Monza, after their other driver Sebastian Vettel retired earlier in the race due to brake issues.

The driver from Monaco lost control in his Ferrari while trying to gain a higher position in the race.

Fortunately, he was able to walk away from the crash, with “just a bit of pain here and there," but it certainly had fans fearing the worst immediately after it happened.

Since the crash, he has accepted responsibility of the accident, saying: “I lost the rear, as simple as that, it’s my mistake."

It wasn't just fans, however, who were concerned after the red flag; six-time world champion Hamilton was also worried for one of his colleagues.

Immediately slowing down due to the safety car present on the track, his team communicate the ‘red flag’ situation to the Brit.

The dash-cam footage released easily lets you hear communication between the garage and the driver, where the Mercedes ace asks his team if Leclerc is OK.

One of the Mercedes team can be heard through the radio confirming that Leclerc is fine.

Fans were applauding Hamilton after checking up on Charles. Further comments online have also praised Hamilton for showing “good sportsmanship” and “class on and off the track”.

Even though finishing seventh in the Italian Grand Prix – due to a penalty - the Brit currently tops the F1 standings, almost 50 points ahead of fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who sits in second place.

After the race, Leclerc was present to congratulate French driver Pierre Gasly, who won the rather exciting and memorable race at Monza.
