After Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open on Sunday night, fans have taken to Twitter to share memes of Djokovic’s closest rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
After the world of tennis went into shock following the Serbian's controversial evening, no one could quite believe what they were witnessing.
After falling behind 5-6 in the first set of his fourth-round match against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, and having already dropped three set points, Djokovic began to appear frustrated.
After being broken, he then struck a ball to the back of the court, which unfortunately connected with line judge’s throat, subsequently leaving her on the floor. He claimed that this was unintentional, but the officials were left with no other choice but to disqualify him.
Djokovic has since apologised for the incident on his Instagram page and has had a hefty punishment handed to him in the shape of a $250,000 fine and his ranking points being deducted from this year’s competition.
However, it hasn’t stopped fans trolling the Serbian ace with comical memes in reaction to this. Many users used videos and GIFs of Djokovic’s nearest rivals Federer and Nadal, with a select few being displayed below.
Sports presenter Chris Chang waded into the controversy with the presenter tweeting that this would have been the duo's reaction to Djokovic’s disqualification, with Chang posting a GIF of Federer and Nadal laughing.
The same GIF has also been widely used in many other tweets that have surrounded this controversy.
Another tweet also linked a video of the pair laughing with each other as tennis fans around the world tweeted out memes.
With the disqualification, Djokovic can’t add to the list of his 17 Grand Slam titles. He currently trails Nadal by two and Federer by three. Many fans also pointed this fact out in the aftermath.
Djokovic left the US Open on Sunday without attending the post-match press conference, and his temperament is now in serious question.
