Johan Lange has some rather deep pockets at Aston Villa.

Together with Christian Purslow and Dean Smith, it's looking as though the club are going to spend a considerable amount of money this summer.

It might not be the dizzy heights of a year ago but they still mean business in the window.

Gone are the days of Suso's shoddy recruitment - Villa are already looking in a better place after getting rid of their former Sporting Director.

Matty Cash has been signed and despite missing out on Callum Wilson, they have now broken their transfer record to buy Ollie Watkins from Brentford.

His arrival is a considerable statement of intent for a club who lacked goals last term. They have identified what went wrong and are making some very positive strides in order to amend their issues.

Smith knows Watkins well so it should, in theory, be a match made in heaven. Only time will tell, of course.

Ollie Watkins play-off final vs Fulham

He is unlikely to the final addition of the window either. That's because they're leading the race to sign a young Premier League player.

The man in question is Liverpool's Harry Wilson.

Villa have had a long-standing interest in the Welshman but they will have to pay £20m in order to prise him away from Anfield. That's according to The Mirror's David Anderson.

He took to Twitter on Tuesday to suggest that Leeds and the Villans were battling it out for Wilson's signature. However, no bids have met Liverpool's valuation as of yet.

Wilson spent last season on loan at relegated Bournemouth.

Harry Wilson warming up

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Liverpool have done some great business when it's come to selling players down the years so it's no surprise to see they're standing firm over their valuation of £20m.

Dominic Solanke was sold to Bournemouth for £19m only a few years ago for instance, so Michael Edwards clearly knows how to get a deal done.

That being said, Wilson simply isn't worth that amount. He scored seven times last term and is never going to get in Jurgen Klopp's side when you consider the players they already have in their forward ranks.

For a club like Aston Villa, he'd be a decent capture, though.

Harry Wilson in action for Bournemouth vs Villa

Described as "exceptional" by Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa during his stint at Derby in the Championship, Wilson certainly knows where the back of the net and for a side who failed to get much output from their wingers in 2019/20, that bodes well.

Over the last two years, the 23-year-old has scored 25 times. One of those even came against the Villans. That was in August 2019 when the flanker completely embarrassed Neil Taylor.

The Villa left-back finished with a match rating of just 6.3, via WhoScored, as Wilson managed five shots and two crosses. Taylor simply couldn't live with him.
