The original Crash Bandicoot game is 24 years old today

On this day 24 years ago, the original Crash Bandicoot game was released by Naughty Dog on the Sony PlayStation.

Since the first PlayStation console was released in Japan in December 1994, and exported to the rest of the world in September 1995, almost 8,000 titles were released for the console.

Of those, the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy (1996 - 1998) is fondly remembered by the generation of gamers who grew up playing the soon-to-be-released PS5’s earliest ancestor.

Released on September 9, 1996, Crash Bandicoot went on to become Naughty Dog’s first smash hit, and one that the studio remembers fondly; the original Crash Bandicoot game makes a brief cameo in Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog’s 2016 action-adventure title.

While the gameplay and graphics appear to be incredibly basic by today’s high standards, the game was ahead of its time in terms of how it used the original PlayStation’s processing power to provide gamers with an exciting speed-running title.

The original game was so successful that there have since been 17 more Crash Bandicoot games on a whole host of consoles, including the much-loved PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, the Nintendo Wii and the DS. Between 2008 and 2010, the game was also released on iOS, Android and other mobile devices.

After the original game was released in 1996, we were treated to Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot - Warped in the original trilogy and a series of racing games, amongst other titles.

In October 2020, we’re set to return to the world of Crash Bandicoot.

The game has been produced by several developers since it was first released in 1996, with Activision currently preparing to release Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time on PS4 and Xbox One.

Activision’s website describes Crash Bandicoot 4 as “an epic and absurd platforming adventure completely built from the ground up, and a true successor to the original trilogy!”

"Players will join Crash, Coco and friends across time and space to stop Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy, and other nefarious forces from not only taking over the world, but the entire multiverse."

With a return to the Crash Bandicoot multiverse imminent, there’s no better time to dust off the old PS1 and enjoy the original game, 24 years after it first hit our screens.
