Manchester United are starting to look like their former selves.

There's no escaping the fact that it's been a difficult time since Sir Alex Ferguson left his role in 2013 as manager, and that's putting it mildly.

Few would have expected it to take seven years to get themselves back to a place where they finally seem to be on the right track.

That said, they're far from the finished article.

A third place finish in the Premier League last term was a big step in the right direction as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to rebuild the team.

But they know that this term they need to be challenging for the title.

While short term success is absolutely paramount, United are putting a real focus on building for the future.

Bright young players are being introduced to the first team on a regular basis, and that's the way to ensure that the club continues to evolve.

Of course the other way is to pinch the best players off their rivals, and there's no one that they'd rather beat to the punch than Manchester City.

Reports in The Sun have claimed that United are plotting a move to lure Charlie McNeil away from the Etihad Stadium.

The 17-year-old is quite a prospect after scoring over 600 goals in his youth career for City to date.

But after seeing his potential the Manchester Evening News has reported that United have agreed a deal to sign the player that could rise to £1.35million.

A boyhood Man United fan, McNeil has also attracted the interest of sides such as Rangers, RB Leipzig and Juventus.

This is due to him rejecting the offer of a contract at City due to the huge level of competition for places under Pep Guardiola.

But that shouldn't detract from just how big a talent the player is.

A video on YouTube showcases almost five minutes' worth of the youngster's highlights from his career to date, and United are certainly getting a proper player.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Manchester United supporters will be loving this.

Charlie McNeill is a ridiculously good player for his age and the amount of goals that he's scored is frankly a little bit ridiculous.

But United won't complain.

With the 17-year-old being a supporter of the Red Devils it will no doubt make a deal a bit easier to complete.

Given the highlights reel on YouTube, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is getting a proper player.

Of course he won't be ready for the first team just yet, but given his staggering record I'm sure it won't be long before he's thrust into the first team fold.
