Tottenham 0-1 Everton: James Rodriguez's superb highlights on Premier League debut

  • Kobe Tong

Everton couldn’t have made a better start to their Premier League campaign if they tried.

Considering Jose Mourinho has a remarkable record during his second season at clubs, you’d think that the trip to Tottenham on the opening weekend would be nothing short of a nightmare.

But in truth, Everton were in control of the tie in north London for the most part, snatching an unexpected win with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring a fine headed winner in the second-half.

However, there was more for Everton fans to celebrate than an impressive three points because they also got to see some of their marquee summer signings make their Premier League bow.

The Toffees have made some poor choices in the transfer market in recent seasons with the likes of Alex Iwobi, Davy Klaassen, Morgan Schneiderlin and arguably Jordan Pickford all struggling.

But with the pull-power of a three-time Champions League winner in the technical area, you really get the feeling that Everton have finally nailed their summer business.

Rodriguez makes his debut

Well, that certainly seemed to be the case at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with midfield general Allan, procured from Napoli, arguably producing a Man of the Match performance.

However, let’s not pretend as though eyes weren’t mostly on James Rodriguez, who completed his remarkable arrival at Goodison Park after his time at Real Madrid fizzled out.

Everton fans could never have expected before the last few months that an ex-Bayern Munich midfielder who won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup would be playing for their club.

Rodriguez’s highlights vs Tottenham

But alas, here we are and to say Rodriguez’s Premier League debut went well would be an understatement with the Colombian taking a matter of minutes to earn some new admirers.

Sure, there might not have been a Puskas Award-winning volley a la the World Cup, but the 29-year-old made no secret of the fact he was one of the most gifted players on the pitch.

It would be rude, then, for us not to peruse Rodriguez’s fantastic individual highlights which, courtesy of YouTuber ‘2Gzero’, you can check out down below:

To put the performance into context, nobody created more chances (5) or executed as many interceptions (4) as the Colombian from either the Tottenham or Everton camps.

In fact, nobody has been so creative on their Premier League debut than Alexis Sanchez when he first pulled on an Arsenal shirt during a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace six years ago.

In other words, Rodriguez has really hit the ground running in English football and I’ll be the first person to hold my hands up having thought the Everton buy could flop on these shores.

Of course, it’s early days, so my prediction could still stand firm, but trust me when I say that I’d rather see the Golden Boot winner set the league alight than for me to be proven right.
