Tasked with a potentially tricky tie against Tottenham, they made life easy for themselves as their new-look side hit the ground running instantly.
The Toffees may have only won 1-0, but it was an impressive three points for Carlo Ancelotti's men.
James Rodriguez looked bright on debut and on another day, he could have had a couple of assists to his name.
His passing was sumptuous but it was Lucas Digne who was on hand to create the winning goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The forward had struggled post-lockdown so this was a welcome goal for someone who has been a revelation under Ancelotti.
If he can find form again, then Everton will be dangerous this season. Their midfield trio of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and James is eye-catching and will cause a number of teams issues in 2019/20.
Seamus Coleman was another who looked in good form at the weekend but it wouldn't be a great surprise if they went out and bought a right-back.
Fortunately, they have been regularly linked with one this summer.
That happens to be Atletico Madrid defender Santiago Arias.
The Daily Mail reported in mid-August that advanced negotiations were currently taking place for the Colombian to move to Everton.
However, in the last couple of weeks, the deal doesn't appear to have developed.
That is until now because according to Caracol (via Sport Witness), Marcel Brands and co are poised to make a concrete offer for the 28-year-old.
The report claims that Arias is 'destined' to move to the Premier League.
The Express reported a few weeks ago that the 53-cap international could cost around £13.4m - a mere bargain in today's market.

There is a real South American and Colombian love affair going on at Everton right now.
Of course, the Toffees already possessed Yerry Mina before the summer but he has been joined by fellow countryman James, and Arias could now walk through the door too.
He'd join a plethora of Brazilian's on Everton's books as well - Richarlison, Allan and Bernard.
This might not be too important, but it brings a different sense of community to the squad. If you're the only one from your country in the side, it has the potential to be quite lonely. However, Arias should have very few troubles adjusting to the country and the club.
Mina will no doubt be playing a vital role in helping James to settle in at Goodison Park so something like that bodes well for if Arias also walks through the door.
He'd be a valuable player too, especially after Djibril Sidibe returned to Monaco following his loan spell.
The full-back was impressive in plenty of areas last term, making 2.6 tackles per game but also winning 1.8 aerial duels in the process.
For context, Sidibe and Coleman managed just 1.2 and 1.1 a match respectively. He'd certainly add some extra steel to the backline.
