Tottenham's Premier League season got off to the worst start possible.

After a shrewd summer where spending was limited in north London, it showed that they're going to need an awful lot more to compete this term.

Spurs have spent fewer than £30m this summer and are now having to live up to the consequences.

They were swatted aside by an improved Everton side on Sunday as James Rodriguez ran riot down the right-hand side.

He created five opportunities for the Toffees to score as they ran out 1-0 victors in north London.

Amazingly, James arrived at Goodison Park as a free transfer. His performance, however, showed that Spurs missed a trick when failing to identify him as a summer target.

Following Christian Eriksen's departure in January, he would have been an ideal replacement. Yet, here Jose Mourinho's side were struggling to get through Carlo Ancelotti's backline.

Tottenham desperately need some more investment in order to compete this season. If they fail to improve, they can say goodbye to entering the Champions League again.

Top of their priorities at the moment seems to be a striker.

Last week, the Lilywhites were linked with Arek Milik with Mourinho growing frustrated at his lack of options up front.

However, a new player has emerged on their radar.

According to The Daily Mail, Spurs are lining up a bid to sign Frankfurt striker Bas Dost.

He is currently rated at just £5.5m and it's thought the manager wants a more robust and hard-working attacker that can combat the laziness in the squad.

Whether Daniel Levy agrees with Mourinho's proposal, however, is unknown.

Rewind to the 2018/19 season when Spurs reached the Champions League final and you'll remember a certain Fernando Llorente.

The Spaniard happily played second fiddle to Harry Kane but came up with some vitally important moments, particularly in the knock-out stages against Manchester City.

However, he wasn't at the club last term and Tottenham really lacked a plan B. Fortunately, that's something that Dost could give them in abundance.

The Dutchman is a force in the air and knows his way around a header. Standing at a colossal 6 foot 5, he won 5.4 aerial duels last term in the Bundesliga.

He doesn't just have aggression - he can also find the back of the net with great regularity. The Bundesliga website describes the 31-year-old as someone with "top-level know-how" and it's clear to see why.

Dost scored over 25 goals in consecutive seasons Sporting Lisbon and helped himself to eight strikes last term.

During his time at Wolfsburg, meanwhile, he even scored four goals in one game. That led to former Chelsea winger Andre Schurrle calling him "phenomenal".

At a price of just £5.5m, this deal sounds like an absolute no brainer for Levy.
