Wolves eye move for ball-winning machine

Idrissa Gueye vs Marseille

Wolves had a quite brilliant start to the season against Sheffield United last weekend.

It took Raul Jimenez a matter of just three minutes to open his account for the new campaign and then three minutes later, Romain Saiss found the back of the net too.

It was a rampant opening from Nuno Santo's side who showed no signs of rustiness against the Blades.

Jimenez has been the go-to man for Wolves in recent years and after playing 55 matches last term, will have been glad for the mini-break he had after the climax of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Mexican needs to get off to a quick start this season, too. That's primarily because of their new record signing Fabio Silva.

The teenager is also a striker and should provide some able competition to Jimenez as the campaign goes on.

This term, it looks as though Nuno has been trying to make his squad a little bigger. He's preferred to operate with a smaller crop of players but they have signed four new faces, while only losing two first-team players.

Coincidentally, it looks like a few more senior players could arrive before the window is said and done.

One of the areas they're focusing on is in midfield.

According to Le10 Sport, former Everton general Idrissa Gueye is on the radar of Wolves.

They claim that the Molineux side are following him, but they'll face plenty of competition from elsewhere if they want to sign the 30-year-old.

West Ham, Crystal Palace and Manchester United are all credited with an interest in the Senegal international.

It's thought that PSG want to get rid of Gueye this summer, but the report doesn't specify just how much he'll cost.

Transfermarkt rate the midfielder at £21.6m.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

This would be a first-class signing by Wolves, one that could help them to compete even more against some of the top six sides in the top-flight.

Gueye has played 134 times in the Premier League and more than proved his worth over numerous campaigns for Aston Villa and the Toffees.

The very fact he earnt a move to European giants PSG tells you all you need to know about the calibre of player Wolves could sign.

He is a defensive machine, being described as a "monster" for the way he plays by Tim Sherwood.

If you're looking for a more glamorous appraisal, meanwhile, look no further than a remark from Thiago Silva after the French champions beat Real Madrid: "Gueye? He's incredible. I have no words," he said.

It's clear to see why those sorts of comments have been made. In Ligue 1 last term, he won a colossal 3.3 tackles per match. In his last campaign in England, Gueye was victorious in 4.3 tackles.

He is an exceptional ball-winning player.
