Rangers FC have had an absolutely flying start to the new campaign. Steven Gerrard has rallied his players and for once, the Ibrox side are in with a chance of winning the SPFL.

Of course, it's important not to count their chickens before they've hatched, but for the Gers, their start has been near flawless.

Rangers have dropped points in just one of their seven matches so far and in not conceding a single goal, they are six points clear of Celtic and have broken records in the process.

They became the first team for 114 years to keep six clean sheets in their opening half a dozen matches.

That speaks volumes about how good the Light Blues have been, and it also says a lot about the improvement they have made.

Before the Scottish season was cancelled earlier this year, Rangers' defence had been causing them issues.

James Tavernier was chief suspect but Rangers have made substantial strides towards becoming a better team.

Ross Wilson has also been impressive in the transfer market, something he is looking to utilise again in the coming weeks.

In recent days, Rangers have been linked with Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson.

That's courtesy of Football Insider who reveal that the Gers are now set to table a bid for the 27-year-old.

Rangers have held extensive talks with Preston and are locked deep in negotiations to sign the left-footed playmaker.

Johnson has told his manager, Alex Neil, that is he is keen to move to Scotland, but the Preston boss insists a "proper bid" needs to be made for his services.

The Championship outfit are also fielding interest from Celtic for defender Ben Davies.

Rangers have clearly had an eye on improving their midfield this summer. In recent weeks, we've seen moves for Patrik Hrosovsky and Dan Glazer touted but those switches have failed to materialise.

They were both holding players, but now Gerrard has his heart set on improving the team's creativity.

With the addition of Johnson, he'd have a perfect remedy.

He scored 12 goals in the English Championship last season, creating eight goals in the process. Via WhoScored, the Jamaican played 1.4 key passes a match.

Furthermore, he's been tipped to light up the SPFL. Speaking about Johnson this week, former Motherwell man Chris Humphrey commented

"He is unbelievable and in that league he would be unreal. He’d be good for Rangers in Europe as well.

“He is excellent technically, scores goals and has pace. He drives forward with the ball and can play a pass. His all-round game is phenomenal."

That should have Rangers supporters foaming at the mouth.

No price has been touted for the midfielder but he looks an absolute no-brainer.
