This has not been an ideal start to the new season for Tottenham.

Coming up against an Everton side who spent quite a sizable amount in the window, they were beaten 1-0.

James Rodriguez was the star of the show as he created five goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates.

It was a display that must have left Daniel Levy thinking, "I'll have some of that," because his actions in the window since being beaten have been decisive.

A return for Gareth Bale looks as though it'll finally go through if everything can be arranged while a move for Sergio Reguilon is moving towards completion.

Spurs had been pretty reserved in the market so far, especially as far as spending goes, so all of a sudden they've decided to come alive.

It's just as well. Tottenham looked as though they'd been left behind in the transfer market by their top-four rivals.

Daniel Levy

One of the most important priorities this summer has been improving their forward line. Numerous strikers have been linked with a switch to north London but they've failed to get anything done and dusted.

The latest name on the mind of Levy is a surprising one - Christian Benteke.

Yes, that's right, Tottenham could well sign the Crystal Palace attacker in the coming weeks.

That's according to The Guardian who revealed this week that the powerful Belgian had been offered to Spurs.

His name was listed alongside Frankfurt's Bas Dost, so it's clear that the Lilywhites are looking for a very particular type of profile before the window closes.

At present, Benteke is rated at £9.4m.

Christian Benteke

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Of all the players Spurs have been linked with this summer, this is surely one of the worst possible shouts for Levy.

If we take a quick glance down at the list of striking options they could choose from, it includes Troy Deeney, Arek Milik, Alexander Sorloth and Carlos Vinicius.

In this situation, even Deeney would be better than Benteke.

The latter may have been described as a "beast" during his career, but the Watford man has a habit of finding the back of the net with greater regularity.

Christian Benteke

He netted ten times last term, compared to Benteke's shoddy tally of just two in 25 outings.

Although the Belgium international is experienced in English football - playing 225 Premier League matches - this is not the type of player Spurs need to improve their attacking options.

He has beaten the goalkeeper just three times in the last two years. Do we really need to say anymore here?

Tottenham would be throwing away their money.
