Not for the first time, disillusioned Manchester United fans are currently expressing their anger towards Ed Woodward and the Glazer family via social media following a lack of activity in the transfer market.The Red Devils have only signed one player this summer - midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax - while their Premier League rivals have all strengthened considerably in recent weeks.Man City have splashed the cash on the likes of Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres, Liverpool are on the verge of signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, while Chelsea have enjoyed a magnificent window, bringing in Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva.Arsenal have also improved with the acquisitions of Gabriel, Willian, Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares. Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar could also arrive over the coming weeks.Tottenham are poised to sign both Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon, while Everton have brought in James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure.United fans would feel more optimistic if they felt that a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho was imminent.
But that deal is beginning to feel increasingly unlikely, as the Red Devils refuse to meet Dortmund’s £108 million asking price.It’s safe to assume that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have requested more than Van de Beek this summer.
And one man who can empathise with the Norwegian is Man Utd's former boss Jose Mourinho.
United fans are currently sharing a clip from 2018 in which Mourinho, following a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at the International Champions Cup, laments the club’s transfer business.
"I would like to have two more players. I think I am not going to get two," Mourinho told reporters.
"I think that it's possible I will have one. And that one, I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago. And I wait to see if it's possible to have one of these players.”
Mourinho was visibly worn down and frustrated at the time.
And less than six months later, the revered Portuguese coach was sacked by Man Utd following a string of disappointing results during the first half of the 2018-19 campaign.
Will Solskjaer suffer a similar fate if Woodward and the Glazers fail to invest further in the squad before the transfer window closes on October 5?
Only time will tell.
