Aston Villa's summer and subsequent start to the new season has been superb.

They ended the 2019/20 campaign unbeaten in their final four games and they have followed that up with an eye-catching transfer window.

Johan Lange smashed the club's transfer record to bring Ollie Watkins to the club and he has so far scored in his opening two matches.

Both Manchester United and Burton Albion have felt the wrath of his expert shooting skills and Premier League defences have every reason to be worried about Villa's attack.

That wasn't a phrase you often heard last term. Wesley and Mbwana Samatta scored just six times between them in the league - a tally that left a lot to be desired.

Already, the club look a lot better off and they should do given the £75m they're on the verge of spending.

Emi Martinez joined the Villans on Wednesday and Bertrand Traore is due to walk through the door as well.

Yet, Aston Villa's spending probably won't end there.

Reports from The Sun suggest that Villa are plotting a move for Brentford full-back Rico Henry.

Surprise, surprise, it's another former Dean Smith player.

The article states that Villa are tracking the defender and are now weighing up whether to make a late bid for the 23-year-old.

A number of Premier League clubs are also interested in the left-back, including West Ham and Leeds United

Last season, Henry caught the attention of Celtic in a move that could have cost around the £7m mark.

Fortunately for Villa, he's still at Brentford and potentially available again if a sensible bid comes in.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

This would be a brilliant deal for Aston Villa to complete.

Matt Targett spent 12 games out last term for various reasons while Neil Taylor was hardly a competent replacement on the left-hand side.

The 31-year-old is no spring chicken anymore and his WhoScored average match rating for the season was the worst of his career to date.

Subsequently, there is a need for another left-back in the squad. Who better than someone Smith knows incredibly well?

When the pair were at Walsall together, the current Villa boss commented after a match against Sheffield United: "The kid is something special and on Tuesday night, he put in a special performance."

Rico Henry

Henry is often a pillar of consistency. He played a colossal 51 games last term, barely missing an outing for the Bees. On top of that, he is also versatile.

The left-footed player has featured on the left-wing and so far this term, he's also played at right-back.

If Aston Villa prefer to play Matty Cash in a more advanced role this season then Henry could cover adequately on that side of the pitch. After all, they may need more bodies with Frederic Guilbert linked with an exit.
