Newcastle United have enjoyed quite a summer.

Things got off to the worst possible start when their proposed £300million takeover deal fell through in controversial fashion.

Supporters were naturally distraught as a result, but thankfully things soon got back on track.

Early deals for Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick showed early glimpses of the transfer activity that was to come, but few imagined how things would develop.

Much to the surprise of the fans, Newcastle completed high-profile deals for Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis.

Those deals were a big signal of intent and will undoubtedly improve Steve Bruce's side.

But that doesn't mean that the club are finished just yet.

The Magpies are still keeping an eye on the future and have been looking at potential additions who could be a success in the long run.

According to reports from The Daily Mail, they may have found their man.

It's claimed that Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Rodrigo Vilca.

The 21-year-old currently plays for Deportivo Municipal but looks for a big move to the Premier League as he looks to continue his development.

A playmaker by trade, Vilca is highly regarded in his native Peru after receiving his first call-up to the national team.

While Newcastle see him as a player for the future, it's claimed that they have reservations over his ability to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

That means that should a permanent move be agreed, he could be allowed to leave the club on loan in order to adapt to life in England.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

It might not be a deal that gets pulses racing on Tyneside, but it could prove to be a very shrewd move.

Valued at just £180k by Transfermarkt, Rodrigo Vilca has the potential to be a really decent if he can fulfil his potential.

With a deal of £250k tipped to be completed, it means that there's little risk in completing a move from their perspective.

If it doesn't work out, then they've lost very little.

However if the 21-year-old does fulfil his potential, then they may have a little superstar on their hands.
