Chelsea are poised to announce the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes. After months of searching for a new ‘keeper to replace the unconvincing Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club’s No. 1, Frank Lampard and his staff have settled on Mendy. It’s currently unclear whether the Senegal international will immediately become Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper or whether he will merely provide Kepa with additional competition over the coming weeks and months. But the Blues have now sealed Mendy’s signature, according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano.“Edouard Mendy deal as Kai Havertz... ‘just a matter of time’. The agreement with Chelsea has been completed by days. He’s joining on a permanent deal. Fee around €24m. Here we go confirmed,” he tweeted on Saturday morning. When Romano tweets the words ‘Here we go’, you can safely summer that means it’s a done deal.p1eiiv7cb61fe61h7k8701mtb15crf.jpgMendy, who turns 29 next March, has only been at Rennes for a year after joining the club from Reims. But the shot-stopper did enough over the course of the 2019-20 campaign to impress the powers that be at Stamford Bridge. This one-minute video shows Mendy in action…

Interestingly, Romano also says that after announcing Mendy, Chelsea will then consider a move for West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

The west London outfit have been linked with Rice this summer but, as things stand, they have made no formal approach for the England international.

Romano adds that Chelsea are yet to make a bid for Rice, who is one of West Ham’s most important players.

The 21-year-old grew up in Chelsea’s youth academy between 2006-2014. He was released by the Blues aged 14 before joining West Ham’s academy.

He remains close friends with Mason Mount and the two midfielders could be reunited before the summer transfer window closes on October 5.
