Leeds United are aiming high this season.

After storming to Championship glory last term the Whites have certainly got a taste for playing winning football.

To finish 10 points clear of their closest rivals in the second tier was a huge achievement, and it seems that the habit of picking up three points has stuck with the team.

Ensuring they avoid the drop is clearly the first objective this term, but Marcelo Bielsa hasn't built his reputation on meeting minimum requirements.

That's been shown by the club's activity in the transfer market.

As well as signing the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Cody Drameh and Sam Greenwood with a view to the future, the Whites have certainly meant business with arrivals for the here and now.

Robin Koch and Rodrigo both arrived at the club with big reputations and are expected to play a key role for Marcelo Bielsa this term.

But the club's business is far from complete.

Leeds are determined to sign a midfielder, and according to reports they have an interest in one player in particular.

Italian publication La Nazione has linked the club with a move for Erick Pulgar.

The Chilean midfielder currently plays for Fiorentina where he enjoyed an excellent campaign last time out.

This included featuring on 41 occasions, scoring seven and creating eight goals from a defensive midfield position.

Pulgar is highly-rated around Europe, with reports last summer linking him with the likes of Arsenal, AC Milan, Roma and Inter Milan.

With West Ham also interested, Leeds face a battle to get the deal done and could have to pay a significant fee to get the move completed.

However it's claimed that the Whites are only willing to pay £9 million for the player, despite him having three years left on his contract.

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Erick Pulgar would certainly fit the bill at Leeds United.

A deep-lying midfielder with an eye for goal, the Chile international would slot into Marcelo Bielsa's side seamlessly.

With Transfermarkt valuing him at £13.5 million, the £9 million that Leeds are reportedly willing to pay is slightly concerning, particularly given how highly Fiorentina rate him.

Whether a move comes to fruition remains to be seen, but with the transfer deadline getting closer by the day there's a real need for the west Yorkshire side to kick on.

Leeds were impressive against Liverpool last weekend, but there's a real feeling that they need further additions.
