It's been quite a summer for Newcastle United. After the lows of the failed takeover from Amanda Staveley and PIF, things have certainly picked up in the weeks that have followed.Fans expected it to be a difficult pre-season for the club as they licked their wounds over the way that the takeover fell through, but the Magpies reacted in the best way possible.Putting an immediate emphasis on preparing Steve Bruce's squad for the season ahead, Newcastle burst into life in the transfer market.Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick arrived on free transfers, before three deals in the space of 48 hours saw the club really kick on.Those deals were for Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis who will all improve Bruce's side significantly. But it seems that the Magpies aren't done yet. With a few weeks still remaining of this transfer window, the club will be looking at further additions with Luke Edwards from The Telegraph claiming that Newcastle are still looking for two players - a central defender and another attacker.

Edwards said: "Bruce in a familiar position as Newcastle United manager.

"Needs to move players on before he can realistically bring additional ones in but is trying.

"Wants a striker and a CB ideally.

"Lots of PL clubs waiting to see who’s available on loan but should be more arrivals before window closes.

"Still hoping there are offers for Atsu, Saivet, Aarons and possibly Yedlin too.

"Market quite slow and some of those have been surplus in previous windows and not been able to find another club.

"Seems a centre back is the priority but likely to be lots of late business done across PL."

GIVEMESPORT'S Phil Spencer says...

Newcastle United have exceeded all expectations in the transfer market this summer.

Most supporters expected that the club would be keeping their wallet firmly in their pocket as they looked to avoid splashing out on players.

But instead fans have been pleasantly surprised.

The deals so far represent a significant step forward as they add proven Premier League experience that will undoubtedly improve the team.

If Newcastle can sign two more players then supporters will be thrilled.

Providing there are no high profile exits, the hope will be that the club have more than enough to escape a relegation battle and that will mean that they can look up the table rather than over their shoulders.
