Just when you thought 2020 could not get any more mental, rumours surfaced this week of a potential exhibition boxing match between multiple-time world champion Floyd Mayweather and social media superstar Logan Paul.
Mayweather is now 43-years-old and has not fought professionally since he knocked out Conor McGregor in their mega-money bout back in August 2017. The 50-fight veteran did, however, venture to Japan in December 2018 to face kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition match. Mayweather blasted Nasukawa out in just 139 seconds at RIZIN 14 - earning a reported $9 million in the process.
It is easy to see, then, why Mayweather would be keen to take on Paul in another exhibition bout - one that would surely generate far more interest (and revenue) than the Nasukawa fight.
Paul himself has entered the ring on two occasions - once professionally and once in an exhibition match. Both bouts saw him face fellow YouTuber KSI, but neither saw Paul taste victory.
On paper, the proposed fight would be a complete mismatch. With that said, though, you know that a fight is a big deal when it gets the Fight Night Champion treatment - and YouTube channel Big Fight Simulations had obliged - playing out the Mayweather Vs Paul clash on the classic boxing title.
Paul, the larger man in both real-life and virtual terms, actually begins the bout well - taking the first two rounds on a pair of the judges' scorecards. However, things quickly go downhill for the 25-year-old in the third round after he is knocked down by a stiff right hand.
Paul's stamina quickly empties in the rounds that follow and he is able to offer little to challenge Mayweather, before being dropped again in round six.
The end comes a round later, when Mayweather nails Paul with a left uppercut from which he cannot recover. Mayweather officially wins the simulated contest with 45 seconds remaining in round seven by TKO.
If the fight ever does become a reality, it may not differ too much from the virtual version offered up by Fight Night Champion. Paul last fought as a cruiserweight and is far more physically imposing than Mayweather.
Whilst Floyd undoubtedly has the edge to terms of boxing ability, he has been known to take his time in the early rounds of a contest and so an early knockout might be far from the formality that some may think.
The end result, though, would surely be Mayweather by stoppage, possibly after taking his time to toy with Paul.
It might not be the most competitive bout that the world has ever seen, but the build-up to a fight between the pair could not fail to be entertaining. In the absence of much top-level action this year, this proposed exhibition could prove to be a great spectacle if nothing else.
